Regional Hubs for Research Oriented Medical Education

Regional Hubs for Research Oriented Medical Education

One of the major problems with the highly successful ROME was that it was totally administered by the academy from its Pune lab, with the result remote and smaller difficult to approach medical colleges could not get its full benefit. The academy is currently working on a Department of Health Research, GOI sponsored program titled “Regional Hubs for Research Oriented Medical Education”.

This new program was developed with a view to overcome the short-comings of the previous, highly successful ROME program. This program focuses on providing hands-on experience of laboratory techniques and help set-up regional units for training and boosting research culture among medical fraternity.

The DHR (GOI) has established, in last five years, a series of Multidisciplinary Medical Research Units (MRUs) in government medical colleges across different regions of India to strengthen research infrastructure. The academy proposed that the Regional ROME units to be established in selected medical colleges that have MRUs. The academy which has developed this concept, will act as coordinator for the first three years. Later the ROME activities will be made part of MRUs. This program gives emphasis on training MRU faculty in laboratory techniques.

We also believe that the regional hubs will encourage and support research activities in their respective areas so as to benefit maximum medical colleges. This will help to improve the overall research scenario in our country and develop a network of interdisciplinary research.

Under this program we have conducted six in-house workshops and two satellite workshops in Mysore and Tirupati, listed in table.
